How much pain is normal?

The way people experience pain varies greatly from person to person, so comparing pain levels to friends or family won’t always be helpful. People’s symptoms can be very different and some can tolerate more pain than others.

When to ask for help

The important thing for people to remember is that if their symptoms affect their ability to do everyday activities, it’s time to seek medical attention.

If someone finds that they’re taking over-the-counter painkillers every day (e.g. paracetamol), or if taking the maximum amount prescribed on the packet isn’t helping with the pain, they should speak to their doctor.
